Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) is a medical procedure that uses echocardiography to produce detailed images of the heart from within the esophagus by inserting a probe (transducer) through the mouth or nose and gently guided down the esophagus. TEE provides more detailed images than a traditional transthoracic echocardiogram because the esophagus is closer to the heart. This makes it particularly useful in evaluation of certain heart diseases.
